2023 RFMTU Highlights
What a year it’s been for our RMFTU chapter! Follow along as we take a look at some of the best moments from 2023:
RMFTU PRESENTED GOLD TROUT AWARD
RFMTU was presented the National TU Gold Trout Award at the annual trout Unlimited CX3 event in Spokane, Washington. Our Chapter was recognized for the innovative and creative ways we engage the northern Colorado community to protect, restore, and conserve fisheries. This is the highest-level award a chapter can receive- a very impressive accomplishment!
TROUT EXPO
In March, RMFTU hosted the Chapter’s inaugural “Trout Expo”. The event had hundreds in attendance and brought in some of the biggest names in fly fishing and fly tying that the state has to offer. Our 2024 Trout Expo will be even bigger, and we can’t wait! See you there on March 23rd.
STREAM MONITORING CAMPAIGN
Led by Phil Wright, we had a team of fantastic volunteers who deployed, maintained, and collected stream temperature sensors in creeks across the Poudre drainage. The data will be used by the U.S. Forest Service to monitor the health of the watershed and guide management decisions
FISHERIES AND HYDROLOGY SAMPLING
RMFTU volunteers partnered with Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the U.S. Forest Service for multiple field sampling efforts, including an annual electrofishing effort on the Poudre, a Poudre stocking effort, a William’s Gulch stocking effort, and an angling survey on Big South, just to name a few.
POUDRE HEADWATERS PROJECT
The Poudre Headwater’s Project is RMFTU’s keystone project. Many of the highlights listed above are part of the project. This collaborative, multi-year, inter-agency effort is designed to provide secure habitat for Greenback Cutthroat Trout in the Poudre.
