Opportunities Available Throughout the Summer

Chris Kennedy, retired Fish Biologist with the USFWS, handles the bulk of fish management in Rocky Mountain National Park. As a one-man crew, he relies heavily on volunteers to complete projects during the field work season, which generally runs from May through October. Trout Unlimited volunteers have been volunteering with Chris for many years to complete this important conservation work in RMNP.

  • Looking for 1-2 people to independently hike up to the lake and assess spawning fish once per week. The lake is in Wild Basin and is 4.2 miles each way with a 2,000 foot elevation. Volunteers will look for fish in the outlet stream, count their numbers, estimate sizes and describe spawning behavior. You do not need to commit to the whole time, we can have different people go up each week.

  • Looking for one person to assist with data collection and recording on an as needed basis for day trips over these three weeks. This work is part of the Poudre Headwaters Project (PHP) and work to be conducted and timing will be determined by the Forest Service. Most likely this will consist of collecting discharge readings, time of travel studies and/or electrofishing.

  • Looking for 1-2 people per week to assist removing fish by electrofishing.

This is a camp out and volunteers will need to commit to a full week, most likely Monday through Thursday. The camp will be at the Upper Ouzel Creek campsite (5.5 miles, 2,600 foot elevation gain) with the work site up to one mile from the campsite. Volunteers will work as part of an electrofishing crew netting stunned fish. Volunteers are responsible for all their own gear, food, warm clothing, camping and disinfected waders. Mules will be available the first work day for each week and will carry personal gear to the campsite.

  • Looking for 1-2 people to work as part of an electrofishing crew netting stunned fish downstream of Fern Lake. This is a camp out at the Fern Lake campsite, however if volunteers are strong enough it can be done as day trips. Volunteers are responsible for all their own gear, food, warm clothing, camping and disinfected waders. Mules will be available the first and last day of the project and will carry personal gear to the campsite.
